Here are some tips to help you in this endeavour in-shaa Allâh:
1. Be a role model
Children learn best by observing their parents’ behaviour. Model gratitude in your daily life by expressing appreciation for the blessings you have, such as saying “Alhamdulillah” (thank God) for good health, delicious food, or a beautiful day. Let your children see your gratitude in action.
2. Start with the basics
Teach children to say “Alhamdulillah” for the little things in life. Encourage them to express gratitude for a tasty meal, a comfortable home, or a loving family. Encourage them to make a habit of saying “Alhamdulillah” sincerely and from the heart.
3. Practice creative gratitude habits
Create family habit that cultivate gratitude. For example, you can start each meal by saying a simple du’a (prayer) of gratitude together, or have a family gratitude jar where everyone writes down things they are thankful for and share them during family gatherings.
4. Engage in acts of charity
Encourage your children to participate in acts of charity and kindness. Engaging in charitable activities, such as donating clothes or food to those in need, helps children realize the blessings they have and fosters a sense of gratitude.
5. Reflect on Quranic verses and stories
Explore Quranic verses and stories that emphasize gratitude and discuss them with your children. Reflect on the stories of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the gratitude he expressed. Highlight the importance of being thankful to Allah for His blessings.
6. Discuss your blessings together
Create a gratitude journal where your child can write or draw things they are grateful for.
Make it a daily or weekly activity where you sit together and share your blessings. This will help children recognize and appreciate the abundance in their lives.
7. Encourage giving thanks to others:
Teach your children to express gratitude not only to Allah but also to others. Remember that Hadith about this?
Encourage them to say “thank you” when someone does something kind for them, whether it’s a friend, family member, or teacher.
PS:
Remember, teaching gratitude is a continuous process. It requires consistency and patience.
By nurturing a mindset of gratitude, you can help your children develop a positive outlook on life and cultivate an appreciation for the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah.
May Allâh continue to grant us grateful hearts and beneficial knowledge and hikmah to nurture our kids on deen till Jannah.
