A mum is wondering how to teach her 6yr old Qabli & Ba’di (Sujud of Forgetfulness in Salat). Below are some suggestions.

Before you teach your child about Sujud Sahwi (prostration of forgetfulness):

  • Ensure you revise your notes well on the topic.
  • Use age-appropriate language as you know your child to understand.
  • Cite relatable examples.

Explanation example:

Dear son, Sujūdu-s-Sahwi is a Sujūd (prostration) of forgetfulness that is performed during Salah (prayer) if one forgot certain actions in the prayer or added certain extra actions by mistake which are not supposed to be added.

Kabli or Qabli (means “before” قبل) and Ba’di means “after” بعد). They are two Arabic terms related to Sujūdu-s-Sahwi.

Further explanation examples:

Qabli refers to a prostration of forgetfulness that is performed before Salaam or Tasleem (i.e. completing the Salah).

Ba’di refers to a prostration of forgetfulness that is performed after Salaam, i.e. completing the Salah.

To explain Qabli and Ba’di to a child below 10 years, a parent can use simple language and provide examples that the child can relate to.A parent can say, for example:

“My dear…, Kabli means if we make certain mistakes in our prayer and we realize it whiles praying, we need to make Sujud Sahwi before we say the Tasleem. It’s like checking our work before submitting it to the teacher.”

“Baadi means if we make certain mistakes in our prayer and we realize it before or after we finish, we need to make Sujud Sahwi after we say the Salaam/ Tasleem. It’s like going back to correct a mistake we made in our homework after we have submitted it to the teacher.”

By using simple language and relatable examples, a parent can help a child understand the concept of Kabli and Ba’di in Sujud Sahwi during Salah in-shaa Allâh.

Some other notes, most important to revise on this topic are the Arkaan, Waajibaat, Sunan, of Salat etc.

PS:

Dear parents and teachers,

As our children grow, their understanding of Salah (prayer) should also mature. It is essential that we increase the level of explanation for them as they progress in their knowledge and age.

For younger children, we can focus on the basics, such as the number of Rak’ahs, the correct postures, and recitation of the Surahs. As they get older, we can add more details, such as the significance of each position, the meanings of the Surahs, Sujud Sahwi etc.

We must remember that Salah is a fundamental pillar of Islam, and it is our responsibility to ensure that our children have a thorough understanding of it. By increasing the level of explanation for them as they mature, we can help them develop a deeper appreciation and connection with their prayer in-shaa Allâh.

Let us continue to learn, guide and educate our children to become knowledgeable and devout Muslims. Wa biLlaahi Tawfeeq

May Allâh continue to grant us beneficial knowledge and hikmah to nurture our kids on deen till Jannah.
